Japan’s Ghibli Museum was easily one of our family’s favorite places to visit our trip. And now anyone can see this amazing museum with an official online virtual tour.
An Odd Sight in Athens
The winter of 2021 was a weird one, and one of the events that freaked people out was seeing a layer of snow on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
New Year, New Experiences
Way back in 2015, I wrote about this world-traveling family’s 20 Most Memorable Moments of 2014. But our journey had only just started — we continued hopping across the globe for a good portion of 2015. Here are the 35 things we experienced in 2015 that we regularly talk about.
A Visit to Zingerman's Delicatessen
A Culinary Delight in Michigan
The #2 Zingerman's Reuben just may be the best sandwich in the world.
A Ride on the S.S. Badger
A Quick Trip on a Huge Car Ferry
There are many different ways to get from Wisconsin to Michigan, but we opted to go straight across Lake Michigan on the SS Badger.
Attractions Along a Lengthy and Desolate Road
Bullets, Drugs, and Corn
› South Dakota is 383 miles wide, and driving across it can be a long, boring affair. Fortunately, there are a few places that have sprung up along this route over the years that offer road-weary travelers a welcome respite—and an opportunity for them to part with their money.
Rock Solid Fun in the American West
Arizona, Utah, South Dakota
› The United States is vast. So vast, we couldn't do everything we wanted to do. But, during the course of a few days in July, we took in some pretty monumental sights—and a few that weren't so monumental.
Adventures Along Historic Route 66.
Exploring California and Arizona.
› We spent the first few days of our summer road trip exploring the roadside attractions and ghost towns along Historic Route 66.
We took on the world, now we're taking on the United States.
› This summer we're packing up and hitting the road to experience that great tradition—the Epic American Road Trip. We'll be traveling the highways and byways of the United States, journeying through 17 states in three weeks. Join us, won't you?
Sunday, 19 July, 2015. Day 333.
Re-Entry and Repatriation.
› In the wee hours of our 333rd day of travel, we checked out of our Montreal hotel and took a taxi to Pierre-Elliot Trudeau Airport for the final flight of our trip—back to the United States of America.
Friday, 17-07-2015—Saturday, 18-07-2015
Days 331—332
› We were in the final country during the final days of our trip, and we were a little sad it would all be ending soon.
Wednesday, 15-07-2015 — Thursday 16-07-2015.
Days 329—330.
› We heard rumors of the magical healing properties imparted by the mineral-rich geothermal heated waters of the Blue Lagoon. Of course we had to investigate this for ourselves.
Tuesday, 14-07-2015. Day 328.
Waterfalls, Geysers, and First Parliament.
› Iceland prides itself on being a land of ice and fire, and today we saw that first-hand when we toured the Golden Circle. We visited icy waterfalls, boiling glaciers, and the true birthplace of human democracy. It was an epic day.
Saturday, 11-07-2015. Day 327
Endless Days, Statues, Hot Dogs
After leaving England, we had a three-day layover in Iceland, a small island country the locals call a land of ice and fire. On our first day, we got the lay of the land in Reykjavik, along with a history lesson or two, and some delicious hot dogs.
Friday, 10-07-2015 — Sunday, 12-07-2015
Day 324 — Day 326
After nearly a month, we were getting ready to leave England behind. But first we had to play video games ... a lot of video games.
Sunday, 05-07-2015 — Thursday, 09-07-2015
Day 319 — 323
We left England behind for a little while to explore the wilds of Scotland for five days — and visit some old friends.
Saturday, 04-07-2015. Day 318
New Shoes and an Ancient Wall
Way back around the year 120, Roman Emperor Hadrian built a giant wall too keep the wildmen out of the northern border of the Roman Empire. Parts of that wall still stand today.
Friday, 03-07-2015. Day 317
Codebreaking and Pancakes
We leave London at last and head north, stopping at Milton Keynes and visit Bletchley Park, home of the World War II codebreakers before venturing on to the small town of Olney (home to a very unusual race).
A look into what London is ... and what it isn't
And it’s weirder than you think
As we've mentioned a few times, the City of London is but a small part of what most people consider to be London. But what makes London different from the City of London? It's complicated ...
Venturing Further Out into London
Rain, Royal Gardens, Longitude, and Tennis
We spent a lot of time in London, and that included some adventures into the wilds of Greater London, a really huge collection of boroughs and neighborhoods surrounding the City of London.
We've Got the Repatriation Blues
› We know it's been a while since you've heard from us. Here's some rationale for that—and a commitment to do better going forward. So join us, won't you?
A Trip Around the World in One Short Video
During our 333-day trip around the world, I filmed one second of video for each day we were traveling. Well, kind of. When it was all over, all that footage was turned into a six-minute video that nicely chronicles our journey. And you can see that video right here.
We're Interviewed on Epic Education Radio
› If you're interested in hearing what goes into a trip around the world, head on over to Epic Education Radio where you can listen to Jason Jenkins interview Tom about the trip.
Pick-pocketed in Ho Chi Minh City
› Although we hoped it wouldn't happen, we knew that being pick-pocketed on our trip was a very real possibility. We tried to always be careful, especially in crowded places, but we just weren't careful enough in Ho Chi Minh City.
Meanwhile, Back in the States ...
Here's what's been going on.
› You may have noticed things have been a little quiet around here lately. Re-entering the United States after a year abroad has been a little more challenging than we expected and is taking more of our time than we thought it would (especially that part about filing taxes). But we're going to get back to it very soon.
Czech Republic in Pictures
We didn't spend too much time in the Czech Republic, but we made the most of the time we were there. Here's a little of what we saw.
Unusual, Iconic, and Interesting Finds in London
Werewolves, Cabmen, Golden Boys, and Bears
We spent a total of 18 days in and around London so we were able to investigate many of the city’s interesting sights and iconic landmarks.
The Tower of London (And More)
Paint, Armor, Murder, Theater, Bridges.
Even though our Royal London Walking Tour was over, we just kept going to see what else London had to offer the world traveling family.
Austria in Pictures
We were in Austria long enough to do a few loads of laundry and take a Sound of Music tour, and this (really) short gallery of images reflects that.
When you travel around the world as a family of four for 333 days, you have to find a place to lay your head when the day is done. These are the 109 different places we slept during our trip around the world.
