NEW Zealand
The perfect way to see New Zealand is via camper van. Companies like Britz (which we used in New Zealand) and Jucy (the rental of choice for our Summer of 17 adventure through the United States) coupled with New Zealand’s numerous holiday parks make it easy to see the entire country on a reasonable budget.
And that’s how we ended up traversing this nation’s two small islands in a giant mobile home we called the Behemoth. But more on that story in the pages below.

New Zealand in Pictures
A fairly large gallery of pictures from our two weeks driving around New Zealand in a huge camper van.
Tuesday, 23-09-2014. Day 34
From Christchurch to Sydney.
›We depart from New Zealand's South Island and arrive in a larger island further to the north.
Monday, 22-09-2014. Day 33
Venturing into Rohan and Gondor
If you throw a rock in New Zealand, there's a high likelihood you'll hit a sheep. However, if you don't hit a sheep, you'll probably hit a billboard advertising a Lord of the Rings tour. So we thought we should give one a try.
Sunday, 21-09-14. Day 32
Steampunk, Time Travel, and the World's Greatest Playground
After a chilly night watching small penguins come back to their homes after a day fishing at sea, we explored Oamaru for a little while before heading off for Twizel.
Saturday, 20-09-14: Day 31
World Records and Penguin Rafts
A whole bunch of cool things happened today, so this is a pretty long retelling.
Friday, 19-09-2014. Day 30
Cookie Time, High Winds
What time is it? It's Cookie Time! And time for a long drive.
Thursday, 18-09-2014. Day 29
High Hills and Hot Water
You can't really visit Hanmer Springs without going to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa. So we did. But before that, we had some hiking to do.
Wednesday, 17-09-2014. Day 28
Broken Glass and Narrow Bridges
We started the day with a (small) disaster and ended it very cold. But in-between all that, we did stuff.
This is Hokey Pokey Ice Cream
It's vanilla ice cream with chunks of honeycomb toffee. It's quite delicious.
Tuesday, 16-09-2014. Day 27
Jumping Pillows and Crayfish
We venture deeper into the South Island and realize it's going to get cold.
Monday, 15-09-2014. Day 26
Mis-Bookings and Expensive Ferries
When you don't book things yourself, you don't really have any control over what happens. Fortunately, it works out all right ... this time.
Sunday, 14-09-2014. Day 25
An Udderly Fantastic Day
A stop in Bulls, then a fantastic evening in Wellington.
13-09-2014: Day 24
Giant Carrots and Sports Fans
We spend a day relaxing in Ohakune, a town famous for carrots.
Friday, 12-09-2014: Day 23
Kiwis and Glow Worms
Our fourth day in New Zealand, we see the elusive kiwi and the bioluminescent glowworms.
11-09-2014: Day 22
Cold Showers and Kiwi Dreams
Our plan today was to pack up and leave Sandspit, then head south of Auckland to get to Camp Kiwi, another motor camp that was adjacent to the Kiwi House, one of the places that offered a chance to see kiwis.
10-09-2014: Day 21
Black Sand, White Sheep
After a nice walk along Muriwai Beach, we drove up to Sheepworld and got a hands-on demonstration of what it takes to shear a sheep.
09-09-2014: Day 20
Gannets and Hokey Pokey
After flying 34 hours on five planes in the past eight days, we're relieved we wouldn't have to get on a plane for two weeks. At least until we saw how big the camper van we'd be driving around these small islands was.
07-09-2014: Day 19
Dust Up at Sydney International
Day 19. A funny thing happened on the way to New Zealand ... our misadventures in the Sydney International Airport.
Introducing The Behemoth
This KEA camper van would be home for the next 15 days.
Going Steampunk in Oamaru, New Zealand
We went to Oamaru, New Zealand to see the blue penguins. And we did. But we were taken by surprise when we learned that the town is New Zealand's steampunk capital and home to the incredible Steampunk HQ.
